THE RECENT RAPID rise in energy costs is refocusing attention on the energy-saving potential of drives and high-efficiency motors (HEMs). Although this focus is justified, it does not take into account installations where HEMs are part of a larger power transmission chain with gearboxes, or where motors are driving pumps or compressors.
