With 1,500 buses in operation in 10 separate transit divisions, Kevin Newman; overhaul superintendent for Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), is taking a mote preventive approach to maintenance at the three facilities in Bladensburg, Landover and Montgomery, MD. "We used to address repairs and overhauls almost entirely on the equipment failure mode," says Newman. "Now, out maintenance program is much more pro-active. We have begun to replace and rebuild each vehicle based on mileage as opposed to actual equipment failure. Every bus goes into the overhaul program after every seven years in service."
