The development of biodegradable lubricants, greases and similar machinery fluids has been targeted for applications in environmentally sensitive offroad service. Advances in synthetic and vegetable oil stocks have aided in this growth, as has a healthy push from regulatory agencies. Thus, initiatives such as the 2002 Farm Bill and the associated U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) draft guidelines that define exactly what products would be approved for use by federal agencies and their contractors' are the latest in a long line of actions by western governments to help reduce the effects of activities on offroad ecosystems.
