文摘:We have proposed and demonstrated Optical recording devices using the smectic layer alignment control in ferroelectric liquid crystals. The methods utilizing the chiral nematic (N{sup}*) - the chiral smectic C (SmC{sup}*) phase transition and utilizing the smectic layer rotation induced by application of asymmetric voltage pulses were proposed. The storage of pattern and the erasing of the stored pattern were demonstrated in the both methods. Depending on the mechanism using only two kinds of the layer alignments, the device using the N{sup}* - SmC{sup}* phase transition can handle only a binary pattern. The device using the smectic layer rotation, however, has the ability to handle a gray-level pattern.
