It should be concluded that the performance of all heat transfer fluid seals is related directly to the control of the seal-operating environment and the selection of seal designs, materials of construction, and wearing faces that will be compatible with fluid characteristics. Equipment characteristics may differ materially, particularly in relation to the effectiveness of pump cooling jackets, heat exchangers, and the high temperature characteristics of a selected heat transfer fluid. The successful application of mechanical seals to a heat transfer fluid system will require a detailed review of all of these factors when selecting seals and sealing systems for optimum performance.
