文摘:Although 2.2-dibmmo-3-nitrilopropionamide (DBNPA) has been used for nearly 25 years to treat cooling tower and other low organic-load, industrial process fluids, the U.S. EPA did not approve its use in metalworking fluids until late 1976. Because of its short half-life at pH> 8.0, the traditional DBNPA product [20% active ingredient (a. i.) aqueous solution] has limited usefulness in metalworking fluids. DBNPA in a 40-percent a. i., time-release tablet (DBNPA-TR) was approved for use in December 1996. Preliminary laboratory trials indicated that DBNPA-TR tablets provide two to four weeks, broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. This paper presents data from field evaluations performed at three facilities by three major coolant formulators. DBNPA-TR was used at a treat rate of one 0.44 lb (200 g) tablet per 50 gal (189L). Each field evaluation compared DBNPA-TR performance in at least three similar sumps with that of the site's traditional microbial control program in three additional sumps. DBNPA-TR's performance in a variety of metalworking fluids and operations provides a clear profile of the product's performance benefits and limitations.
