文摘:Not just practical, a pickup truck can also be seriously cool, particularly when combined with the classic charisma of the Mk 1 Golf, as Peter Noad reports. VOLKSWAGEN'S choice of the name 'Caddy' for its new pickup truck was particularly significant in the late Seventies. It acknowledged the fact that most owners had by then come to associate the name 'Golf with the ball game, rather than the German spelling of the Gulf Stream which had originally been intended as the name for its new hatchback. Originally designed in Germany as part of a study of potential derivatives of the Golf, it was initially known simply as the VW Rabbit Pickup when it was introduced to the American market, where there was a clear requirement for pickups as leisure vehicles. To call it Caddy would have been awkward, in a market where that name is common slang for Cadillac.
